MATHUR, Jaskiran K.

Jaskiran K. MathurDr. Jaskiran K. Mathur is Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Honors Program at St. Francis College in Brooklyn New York. A Sociologist from India, Dr. Mathur has varied experience in gender issues, rehabilitation, development and voluntary work with rural and urban women in India and the U.S. She has worked as a Consultant to the World Bank at its Mission to the United Nations in New York, and she represented UNESCO in the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. In India, she worked as a Sociologist in the Rehabilitation Cell of the Narmada Valley Development Authority in Madhya Pradesh structuring programs for rehabilitating those displaced by this major multi-purpose irrigation project. As the President of a non-government organization in Shadhol (a tribal District of MP), she ran a counseling center for women in distress and also organized programs for adult literacy, vocational training and providing micro-credit to urban and rural women. She has continued her work with women in the U.S. as the Domestic Violence Program Coordinator for SAKHI for South Asian Women, a not for profit organization in New York where she continues to volunteer her time for advocacy and outreach efforts. In 2007, Dr. Mathur was the President of the New York State Sociological Association.
