The Revolt Against the Masses

A conversation on the evolution of American liberalism

One of the big political developments of the last few years has been the rise of "populist" movements, to the point that many people have remarked that the opposition "populism vs. elitism" seems to have become more significant than the traditional opposition "right vs. left." In the US, rather surprisingly, the Democratic party has become the political home of a large part of the "elite" (bureaucrats, academics, journalists, but also many corporate figures), whereas the Republican party has become increasingly attractive to poorer (rural and working-class) segments of the population. We will discuss the historical origins and possible consequences of these transformations with two distinguished observers of American politics.
