AMBROSIO, Giorgio

Dr. Giorgio AmbrosioDr. Giorgio Ambrosio is Applied Scientist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Chicago.  His main field of research is applied superconductivity, from material development to large scale applications in superconducting magnets for particle accelerators and detectors.  

He started his career at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Milan, Italy) where he contributed to the design of the Barrel Toroid for the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator and latest addition to the accelerator complex at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland.  In 1998, he moved to Fermilab where is a leading researcher in the development of superconductor technology for accelerator magnets.

He has written and coauthored more than one hundred peer-reviewed papers, and lectured at CERN and at many leading universities.  He is a member of the US National Conductor Development Group, and is the chairman of the Advisory Board of the EuCARD High Field Magnet project.

He is director of the US branch of Euresis (an association for the promotion of culture and science) and a member of the Crossroads Advisory Board.
